Floor Lamp Height and Size Guide
By Metify Homes
The short answer: most floor lamps are 5 to 6 feet tall (150 to 180 cm), and the right height for yours depends on whether people near it are sitting or standing. The rule that settles almost every case is this one.
When you sit beside the lamp, the bottom edge of the shade should be at about your eye level.
If the shade is higher than your eyes, you look up into the bulb. If it is much lower, the light lands on the floor and not on you. Everything else in this guide is that rule applied to different spots.
Heights by position
| Where the lamp stands | Lamp height | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Beside a sofa or armchair | 58 to 64 in (147 to 163 cm) | Puts the shade bottom near seated eye level, around 40 in (100 cm) from the floor |
| Reading chair, lamp slightly behind your shoulder | 55 to 62 in (140 to 157 cm) with a head that tilts | Light falls on the page and not in your eyes |
| Bedside, in place of a table lamp | 50 to 58 in (127 to 147 cm) | You are lower in bed than on a sofa |
| Empty corner, room light only | 60 to 72 in (152 to 183 cm) | Nobody sits under it, so taller is fine and fills the wall better |
| Arc lamp over seating | 72 to 84 in (183 to 213 cm) overall | The arc needs height to clear people’s heads |
These are ranges, not laws. A low sofa or a floor-seating corner with gao takiyas needs a shorter lamp. A high-backed chair can take a taller one.
How to measure for your own sofa
You need a measuring tape and two minutes.
Sit where you normally sit. Ask someone to measure from the floor to your eyes. For most adults on most sofas this comes to 38 to 42 inches (97 to 107 cm).
Open the product page and find two numbers: the total height and the height of the shade.
Subtract the shade height from the total height. That gives you where the bottom of the shade will be.
If that number is within a few inches of your eye-level measurement, the lamp fits.
If the page does not list the shade height, ask before ordering. It is the one number that decides comfort.
Arc lamps need two more numbers
An arc lamp has height and reach. Reach is how far the shade sits from the base, measured along the floor.
Reach. Measure from the spot where the base will stand, usually behind or beside the sofa, to the middle of the seat or coffee table you want to light. The lamp’s reach should be close to that distance. Too short and it lights the sofa back. Too long and it hangs in the walkway.
Clearance. If anyone will walk under the shade, its lowest point should be at least 6 ft 6 in (about 2 m) from the floor. If it hangs over a coffee table or a sofa corner where nobody walks, it can be lower, and the light will be better for it.
Keep the arc away from the ceiling fan. Fans in our rooms hang 8 to 9 feet from the floor, so a lamp will not touch the blades, but a shade sitting right under them will sway in the breeze and the fan’s shadow will flicker across it.
Matching the lamp to the room
Ceiling height changes how a lamp looks. In an apartment with a 9 foot ceiling, a 5 to 5.5 foot lamp looks in proportion. In a drawing room with an 11 or 12 foot ceiling, the same lamp looks lost and a 6 foot lamp with a larger shade sits better.
Shade size follows the same logic. A shade 14 to 18 inches across (35 to 45 cm) suits a normal lounge. Smaller shades suit bedrooms and tight corners.
How much floor does it take?
Check the base before you fall for the shade.
A straight pole lamp needs a circle about 10 to 12 inches across (25 to 30 cm).
A tripod needs roughly 20 to 24 inches (50 to 60 cm), about the footprint of a side table.
An arc lamp has a compact but heavy base, and needs clear floor behind the sofa for it.
A shelf lamp is square, usually 10 to 14 inches a side (25 to 35 cm).
Mark that size on the floor with tape or a newspaper before you order. It is the quickest way to find out that a tripod will block the balcony door.
Quick answers
Is a 5 foot lamp too short? Not beside a bed or a low chair. Beside a standard sofa it is on the short side unless the shade is tall.
Can a floor lamp be taller than 6 feet? Yes, in a corner or as an arc. Beside a seat it will glare.
Does the bulb change the answer? It changes brightness, not height. Use a 9 to 12 watt warm white LED and get the height right first.
Every lamp in our floor lamps collection lists its dimensions on the product page. Measure your seat, then compare.
