Dining Table Light Height: How High to Hang It
By Metify Homes
The bottom of a hanging light should be 30 to 36 inches (75 to 90 cm) above the top of the dining table. Measured from the floor, that is roughly 5 to 5.5 feet, since most tables are about 30 inches high.
That range is not a designer’s preference. It is the gap where three things are true at once: the light falls on the food, you can see the person sitting opposite, and the bulb is not in anybody’s eyes.
Where in the range?
Ceiling height. With a 9 foot ceiling, hang at 30 inches. For every extra foot of ceiling, go up about 3 inches. In a room with a 10 or 11 foot ceiling, 33 to 36 inches looks right.
Size of the light. A large or dense fitting needs more air under it, so go towards 36. Small pendants can come down to 30 and feel cosy.
The shade. If you can see up into the shade to a bare bulb while sitting, hang it lower. If it blocks the face of the person across the table, hang it higher.
The sit-down test
Before the electrician shortens the chain or cuts the cable, have someone hold the light at the planned height. Sit at the table. Then check three things.
Can you see the faces opposite without ducking?
Is the bulb hidden from your eyes?
Stand up from your chair. Does your head stay clear?
If all three are yes, mark that height. It takes two minutes and saves a second visit.
How wide should the light be?
A single fitting should be between half and two-thirds of the table’s width. A table 3 feet wide (90 cm) takes a light 18 to 24 inches across. Wider than that and people bump it when they lean in to serve.
For a round table, use the same proportion of its diameter and hang one light over the exact centre.
One light or several?
| Table | What works |
|---|---|
| Round or square, 4 seats | One pendant over the centre |
| Rectangular, 6 seats, about 5 ft long | One wide fitting, or two pendants |
| Rectangular, 8 seats, about 7 ft long | Three pendants in a row, or one long linear light |
| 10 to 12 seats | Three or four pendants, or two medium chandeliers |
A row of three reads better than a row of two on a long table, because there is a light at the centre. A set sold as three, like the Lampshade Trio, is made for this.
Spacing a row. Divide the table length by the number of pendants plus one. That gives the gap from each end and between each light. On a 7 foot table with three pendants, that is 21 inches from each end and 21 inches between them. Keep every pendant at the same height unless the design is meant to be staggered.
The light goes over the table, not the middle of the room
This is the problem most homes actually have. The builder put the ceiling point in the centre of the dining area. Then the table went against one side, or a sideboard pushed it over, and now the point is a foot and a half away from the table’s centre.
A light that is off-centre over a table looks wrong forever. You have three ways to fix it without breaking the ceiling.
Swag it. Fix a small hook in the ceiling above the table’s true centre. Run the chain or cable from the original point to the hook and let the light drop from there.
Use a multi-drop fitting. A long bar or plate that carries several pendants covers the gap and lets you slide them where they need to be.
Move the table. Sometimes the honest answer.
If the house is still being built, decide where the table will stand first, and give the electrician that spot.
The ceiling fan above the table
Many dining areas have a fan right where the light should be. Both cannot hang from the same place. A pendant inside the sweep of the blades is unsafe, and a light above the blades flickers.
The workable layouts:
Fan in the centre of the room, table and its light towards one side, outside the blades.
Light over the table, and a wall bracket fan or pedestal fan for the dining area.
In an air-conditioned dining room, no fan over the table at all.
Food also goes cold faster under a fan, which is one more reason to keep it off the table.
Bulbs for a dining table
Use warm white, 2700K to 3000K. Food and faces both look better under it. Under cool daylight bulbs, rice looks grey and everyone looks tired.
For a six-seater, two or three LED bulbs of 7 to 9 watts each is comfortable. If the pendants have open bottoms, choose frosted bulbs so nobody looks at a bare filament through dinner.
If the bulbs are dimmable, a dimmer is worth having here more than anywhere else in the house. Bright for homework at the table, low for dinner.
Quick answers
Is 24 inches too low? For most fittings, yes. You will look around it to talk.
My ceiling is 12 feet. Does the light go higher? A little, up to about 36 inches above the table. The chain gets longer. The light does not climb with the ceiling.
Should the light match the table shape? It helps. Round over round, long over long.
